Slovak Defence Ministry files complaint over arms transfers to Ukraine

The Defence Ministry of Slovakia files a criminal complaint against the former government over the donation of fighter jets to Ukraine, Slovak media reported.

The defence ministry is filing a criminal complaint over the former Slovak government’s decision last year to hand over MiG-29a fighter jets as well as the KUB air defence system to Ukraine, according to TASR.

The defence ministry is filing a criminal complaint for the suspicion of committing the crime of sabotage, or treason, abuse of power and failing fiduciary duties.

State Secretary Igor Melicher said the decision to file the complaint over the donation of the fighter jets to Ukraine was due to abuse of power by the former government led by Prime Minister Eduard Heger and former Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad. He added the donation of the air defence system opened Slovak airspace and endangered citizens.

I am convinced that Nad betrayed Slovakia, he told a briefing shown live on Facebook.

Melicher also underlined there was never any legal analysis that authorised the transfer of the aircraft to Ukraine by the interim government of Heger. The analysis submitted by Nad at the time did not fulfil the requirements of the official document. Nad, in turn, denied any offence and stated he would take the same decision again.

In March 2023, the interim government of Heger decided to provide Ukraine with thirteen Slovak MiG-29 fighter jets and part of the KUB air defence system. A number of politicians and lawyers argued that the interim cabinet did not have the authority to donate the MiGs because they considered the donation a serious foreign policy issue.
