Slovakia summoned Ukraine’s ambassador Myroslav Kastran to discuss recent statements on gas transit amid an ongoing dispute between the two countries, Politico reported.
Slovak Foreign Minister Jurai Blanár accused Ukrainian authorities of interfering in his country’s internal affairs, likely referring to the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine as of 1 January this year.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lambasted Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for purchasing gas from Russia rather than from the US or other countries.
Many in Europe … have chosen to preserve their independence and sovereignty. But not Mr. Fico. He chooses Moscow over America and other partners who can provide his country with gas on commercial terms. This is his mistake.
Slovakia and Hungary sought to extend the agreement and continue importing Russian fuel through Ukraine, but Kyiv rejected their requests. In response to the actions of the Ukrainian authorities, Fico called Zelensky an “enemy” of Slovakia.
Our enemy is Zelensky. Zelensky caused the problems we have. I don’t like him because he harms Slovakia.
