Smoke still rising after China chemical plant blast

The day after the explosion at a chemical plant in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, glass shards from windows blown out by the blast littered the roadside for more than a kilometre, Chinese media reported on Wednesday.

An explosion occurred at a chemical plant in Shandong province in eastern China, resulting in a huge fireball and columns of smoke rising into the air.

According to China Central Television, all necessary measures are being taken to rescue and provide medical assistance. Local fire and rescue services dispatched 55 vehicles and 232 personnel to the scene, while the national Ministry of Emergency Management sent national fire and rescue teams to assist in the operation.

The explosion occurred at a facility owned by Shandong Youdao Chemical in Gaomi County. The cause has not yet been determined, and the number of casualties is unknown.

According to the South China Morning Post, residents reported hearing a loud bang and said that windows were shattered in many homes due to the explosion.

Shandong Youdao Chemical, founded in 2019, currently has more than 300 employees who manufacture pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other related chemical products. According to publicly available information, the company is the world’s largest producer of the pesticide chlorpyrifos, producing about 11,000 tonnes of the substance per year.
