Social media platform X deleted hundreds of Hamas-related accounts

Elon Musk claimed that X, formerly Twitter, deleted hundreds of Hamas-linked accounts and flagged thousands content snippets after the militant group’s attack on Israel.

Linda Yaccarino, the company’s CEO, spoke about X’s efforts to combat illegal content. She was responding to a warning from a senior European Union official who requested information on how X was complying with tough new EU digital rules aimed at cleaning up controversial content on social media platforms.

“So far since the start of the conflict X has identified and removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts from the platform. There is no place on X for terrorist organisations or violent extremist groups.”

The EU’s Digital Services Act, which came into force in August, suggests that social media companies must step up monitoring of their platforms for illegal content or else face hefty fines.

There is no place on X for terrorist organisations or violent extremist groups and we continue to remove such accounts in real time, including proactive efforts.

Experts say that since the purchase of Twitter last year, the renamed platform has been proving its unreliability by actively promoting lies under the guise of freedom of speech. In addition, a study commissioned by the EU found that X is the most effective platform for online misinformation.

Its counterparts such as TikTok, YouTube and Facebook have also faced a flood of unsubstantiated rumours and lies about the Middle East conflict.
