The South Korean Foreign Minister and the US Secretary of State confirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula at a meeting in Washington. The parties discussed defence co-operation, interaction with Japan and the situation with North Korea, Korean media reported on Thursday.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula during a meeting in Washington, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.
The minister and the secretary of state agreed to firmly pursue the goal of complete denuclearisation of North Korea while maintaining joint defence efforts, the ministry added.
In addition, the two sides agreed to maintain co-operation on North Korea and to regularly exchange assessments of the current situation.
During the meeting in Washington, representatives from Washington and Seoul also discussed trilateral co-operation with Tokyo and the situation in the region.
Kim Yo Jong, deputy head of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, said earlier that Washington should recognise the new reality and abandon its pursuit of complete denuclearisation of North Korea if the American side is interested in dialogue. North Korea’s nuclear status is enshrined in its constitution.
Kim Jong Un’s sister did not deny the “good personal relations” between the leaders of the DPRK and the US, but said that they should not be used in an attempt to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons.
