South Korea wildfires: four dead, 1,500 evacuated

Wildfires in southeastern South Korea have killed at least four people and injured six. Authorities evacuated around 1,500 residents, according to local media reports on Sunday.

The fire started in Sancheong County on Friday and quickly spread to three other areas, Yonhap News reported. All four victims were found in Sancheong, and five of the injured remain in serious condition.

Firefighters are struggling to control the blaze. Authorities have deployed more than 30 helicopters to assist. By early Sunday, they had contained about 30% of the wildfire in Sancheong.

Lee Han-kyung, deputy chief of the disaster control tower, said dry conditions were fueling the fires.

The flames have already burned 3,286 hectares of land, equal to 4,600 football pitches. Euiseong in North Gyeongsang Province and Sancheong have each lost more than 1,000 hectares.

Firefighters continue to battle the fires in four locations across the region. The South Korean government declared a state of national disaster on Saturday.
