President objects to bill proposed by opposition party to provide a lawyer to investigate Kim Keon Hee’s case.
On Thursday, Yoon Suk Yeol, the President of South Korea, delivered apologies for the situation involving the First Lady, his wife Kim Keon Hee. According to Yonhap News, in a televised address, the president expressed his dismay over his wife’s criticism for receiving an expensive bag, stock scams, and likely interference in government processes.
His apology was as follows:
I believe that the role of the president is not to make excuses. All of thisAsia happened because of my own shortcomings and lack of virtue.
Kim was accused of engaging in stock manipulation, illegally obtaining a luxury bag and influencing the nomination of candidates from the ruling People’s Power Party ahead of last April’s general election. However, prosecutors decided not to charge her for her alleged role in the scheme involving shares in BMW dealer Deutsch Motors Inc. saying she was unaware that her accounts were being used for manipulation.
It is worth noting that Kim was indicted last spring for stock fraud, illegally obtaining an expensive handbag, and in addition for assisting in the nomination of candidates for the general election. Despite the charges for the fraudulent BMW stock scheme, the prosecutor’s office cancelled the charges under the pretext that Kim was unaware of what was happening to her accounts.
In this regard, Yoon was strongly opposed to the opposition party’s proposed bill to appoint an advocate in the case. The President considered such an advocate as “political propaganda” and “unconstitutional”.
In addition, the President noted:
She should have behaved more cautiously and the fact that she has caused public concern is undoubtedly wrong.
It is important to notice that the President did not address the issue of North Korea. Despite the fact that the relations between the two countries have deteriorated significantly recently.
