The simmering resentment against the US military presence in South Korea boiled over this week, as eight student activists were detained after breaching the perimeter of a major American airbase. The incident, which saw protesters charging through the main gates, comes just days after a dangerous chemical leak at the same facility forced the temporary evacuation of nearby residents.
Bold breach at Osan’s front gates
The confrontation unfolded on Tuesday in the city of Pyeongtaek, home to the Osan Air Base. According to local police reports, six members of a progressive student group physically forced their way past the main entrance of the US Air Force installation, shouting slogans demanding the withdrawal of American troops.
Two other accomplices remained outside the perimeter during the break-in. Military police swiftly subdued and detained the intruders before handing them over to civilian authorities.
Protesters decry “colonial” presence
The Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Police Station confirmed on July 4 that it had arrested four young men and four women affiliated with the National University Student Progressive Union. They face charges of violating the Act on the Protection of Military Bases and Installations and are currently under investigation.
In a social media statement, representatives from the student movement described the actions of the US military as a gross interference in the nation’s internal affairs. The group has a history of vocal opposition to the foreign troop presence, repeatedly characterising South Korea as a colony of the United States.
White phosphorus leak fuels public anger
The latest protest was galvanised by a recent safety scare on the very same base. In late July, a leak of white phosphorus was detected from an ammunition container at the facility, prompting authorities to briefly evacuate local residents. The hazardous mishap has intensified public demands for accountability. The South Korean government is currently locked in negotiations with the US command to conduct a sweeping environmental inspection of the military site, a move long resisted by status of forces agreements.
