South Korean soldiers fired warning shots at North Korean military personnel after they temporarily crossed the demarcation line at the 38th parallel, Korean media reported on Tuesday, citing a report by the Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
According to the JCS, a group of about 10 North Korean troops crossed the demarcation line inside the demilitarised zone, which divides Korea into socialist and capitalist parts, around 5 p.m. local time.
After firing warning shots accompanied by calls to withdraw into North Korean territory, the group returned behind the demarcation line.
“Our military is closely monitoring North Korea’s military activities and taking necessary measures based on operational procedures,” the JCS emphasised.
Earlier, the DPRK’s MoD reaffirmed its commitment to the arms buildup.
Seoul said it was “closely monitoring the military activities” of the DPRK and noted that the last time a similar incident occurred at the demarcation line in June 2024. At that time, South Korea claimed three violations by the North Korean military in one month. The South Korean military speculates that DPRK soldiers crossed the border unintentionally.
