South Korea’s ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon has again expressed support for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, Korean media reported on Friday.
Han believes there is no other way and he urged his party members to vote on the impeachment issue based on their own “beliefs.” He noted:
“We must stop further confusion. There is only one effective method now. In the next impeachment vote, the lawmakers of our party should enter the House and cast their votes based on their own convictions and conscience.”
Han had already said on December 6 that he supported the impeachment of the country’s president.
The issue of impeaching the incumbent president of the republic arose after he declared martial law in the country on December 3. Yoon Suk Yeol explained the decision by the need to “eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the free constitutional order,” while journalists linked the head of state’s actions to attempts by his political opponents to conduct impeachment proceedings against him.
On December 7, the parliament of the country held a vote on the impeachment of the president: it was not held, as it was attended by 195 people, and to remove the head of state needs the support of 200 out of 300 deputies.
