Han Dong-hoon, chairman of South Korea’s ruling People Power party, has resigned, announcing his decision at a press conference at the national assembly (parliament) on Monday.
Han Dong-hoon announced on Monday: “I am resigning as party spokesman.”
The politician attributed his decision to his inability to fulfil his obligations as party chairman following the resignation of members of the top executive committee. According to Han Dong-hoon, the work of the structure was paralysed because of this.
He apologised to those who, in his opinion, suffered because of the instability in domestic politics and the martial law declared for a short time. He also said:
“I feel sorry for our supporters who were affected by the impeachment.”
Han Dong-hoon emphasised that he “tried his best to find a better way for this country other than impeachment, but in the end he couldn’t.” He took responsibility for this and repeatedly apologised to the audience.
Han Dong-hoon was elected leader of the People Power Party at a congress on July 23. Thus, he served as party chairman for 146 days.
On December 14, South Korea’s parliament voted to declare impeachment against President Yoon Suk Yeol, who a week earlier made an unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in the country. Han Dong-hoon also supported the impeachment. After it was announced, the politician declared his intention to continue in office. However, as all five members of the party’s top executive committee resigned, the impeachment effectively began.
