Spain hit by powerful earthquake

A strong earthquake struck off the southern coast of Spain on Monday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremors were recorded at 7:13 a.m. local time on Monday. The magnitude was 5.2, which experts classify as a significant earthquake.

The event caused alarm among the population, with many residents calling emergency services for help.

According to eyewitness reports, the earthquake was felt in the provinces of Malaga, Granada and Jaen, as well as in the Levante region, which includes Murcia, Alicante and Albacete.

The epicentre was located approximately 55 kilometres south-east of the city of Almeria, which has a population of around 200,000. The focus was at a depth of two kilometres. There were no reports of casualties or damage.

Spain is located in a seismically active zone on the border of tectonic plates, so small earthquakes are not uncommon here. However, this event attracted particular attention because it was felt over a fairly large area, which is rare for earthquakes of this magnitude.
