Spain holds rally in support of Palestine

Thousands took to the streets of the Spanish city of Zaragoza on Sunday in support of “Free Palestine” as Israel prepares to attack Rafah, the last refuge for hundreds of thousands of civilians and the base of international aid supplies.

Protesters gathered in Plaza del Pilar and created a mosaic of the Palestinian flag with banners in their hands. They also chanted slogans such as “Boycott Israel” and “Free Palestine” and demanded an end to the “genocide”.

Reiterating the call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Spanish foreign minister on Monday said that the situation in Gaza is “catastrophic, dramatic, tragic.” Jose Manuel Albares told the Human Rights Council in Geneva:

“Let us be clear about this, the situation in Gaza is catastrophic, it is dramatic, tragic.”

Israel has been accused of genocide at the UN International Court of Justice over its deadly offensive on the Gaza Strip that killed more than 29,780 people.

In its interim ruling in January, the court in The Hague ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal actions and take measures to guarantee humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilian population.

Israel’s war on Gaza has displaced 85 per cent of the territory’s population amid severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, and 60 per cent of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the UN.
