Spider-Man conquers Hollywood with record-smashing debut that eclipses all but Avengers

The fourth instalment starring Tom Holland has spun the second-biggest domestic debut in Hollywood history, narrowly missing the all-time crown but setting a new single-day benchmark in North America.

A spectacular homecoming

Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: A Brand New Day has swung straight into the record books, amassing a staggering $355m in its US opening weekend, according to Variety. The superhero blockbuster instantly became the highest-grossing debut of 2026, dwarfing the domestic opening of April’s animated feature Super Mario: Galactic Movie by a factor of nearly two.

In Hollywood, the opening “weekend” — which runs from Thursday previews through to Sunday — is regarded as the crucial litmus test for a film’s long-term commercial fate. By this measure, the web-slinger’s latest outing has all but secured its blockbuster status.

A single-day triumph over the mightiest heroes

Spider-Man: A Brand New Day now stands as the second-biggest domestic launch in cinema history, trailing only another Marvel juggernaut: Avengers: Endgame. Combined with an additional $573m from international markets, the wall-crawler’s global total has already reached a dizzying $927m. For comparison, the 2019 Avengers finale posted a $357m domestic opening and a colossal $1.2bn internationally, figures unadjusted for inflation.

However, when examining the single-day tallies, the webslinger has managed to outpace Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The new Spider-Man picture raked in $167m on its first day across the US and Canada, surpassing the $157m that Avengers: Endgame managed during the same window in 2019.

A familiar face, a fresh vision

Spider-Man: A Brand New Day marks the fourth solo outing for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Helmed by director Destin Daniel Cretton, the ensemble cast features Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Jacob Batalon. The previous chapter in the franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, went on to earn a mammoth $1.91bn at the global box office.

The film had its world premiere on 31 July, carrying a production budget of $225m. According to Deadline, the marketing campaign was a blockbuster enterprise in its own right, costing a reported $309m. The promotional push notably featured a cameo from Argentine football icon Lionel Messi in one of its trailers.
