Spring 2025 warmest and sunniest on UK record

This spring in the UK was the warmest and sunniest on record. According to an analysis by the British Met Office, based on preliminary data, spring 2025 will be remembered for its historic climate records.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland experienced their warmest spring since 1884 in terms of average temperature. This exceeded the temperature record set in 2024.

This season was also the sunniest spring in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the sunniest spring in England since records of sunshine duration began in 1910.

The rise in temperatures in March 2025 set the tone for the season: temperatures exceeded seasonal norms and precipitation decreased significantly.

April 2025 was recorded as the sunniest in British history. In May, temperatures remained above average. Thus, the average temperature of 9.5 degrees measured in the spring of 2025 exceeded the long-term climate average by 1.4 degrees. During this period, the temperature rise was not limited to land areas.

Sea surface temperatures in UK waters broke records in April and May, leading to a heatwave in the seas. In some areas, sea surface temperatures rose 4 degrees above average.
