Storm Bert leaves three dead, cuts power across UK

Storm Bert is raging in the UK, which has already claimed the lives of three people. Due to bad weather, there are power outages, flights have been cancelled and some roads are closed.

Snow, rain and wind have not stopped for more than a day. “Orange” level of weather danger has been declared across the UK, but many locals say: it’s just the caprice of the weather. Local resident Mary Walson said:

“We love running in the park in the morning, but today the races have been cancelled everywhere, so we decided to just walk down the street.”

But Scottish neighbours don’t see it that way. About 60 thousand homes have been left without electricity, flights have been cancelled, some roads are closed, traffic delays. Tourist sites are also closed: Edinburgh Zoo, Christmas markets, many cafes and restaurants are not working. Cafe owner Jane Smith said:

“They say the wind will pick up tomorrow and it will be just as bad, but who knows. I’m open and I’ve already had a few customers today.”

Ireland was also affected. About 30,000 homes and businesses were left without power because of the high winds. Residents fear the wet weather will cause flooding of farmland, secondary roads and recreational areas. Meteorologists say the storm will slowly move eastwards across the UK but will lose some of its energy by Monday.
