Suspected Houthi missile strikes container ship in Red Sea

The attack happened off the coast of Mokha, Yemen, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said, without giving any other details.

A barrage of three missiles targeted a Malta-flagged container ship travelling from Djibouti to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, private security firm Ambrey said. It added:

“The vessel was targeted due to its listed operator’s ongoing trade with Israel.”

Yemenis have been actively supporting the Palestinians since the war began on 7 October, when Israel wreaked devastation in Gaza after Hamas launched a surprise retaliatory attack dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm that killed 1,200 Israelis.

Yemen’s armed forces have said they will not stop their attacks until Israel’s relentless ground and air offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 34,488 people and injured another 77,643, come to an end.

Houthi attacks in the Red Sea region have disrupted global shipping, forcing firms to take longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa. The US and Britain have carried out strikes against Houthi targets in response.
