Swedish PM to meet Orbán next week in Brussels, but not on NATO membership

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he will meet his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán in Brussels next week, but the NATO accession will not be discussed.

Kristersson will meet Orbán in Brussels at the European Council meeting on Thursday.

Prime Minister told Swedish TV4: “We are not negotiating NATO membership, but we can discuss how we can best cooperate as NATO members.”

Turkey’s reassurance on the issue of Sweden’s NATO membership apparently prompted the Hungarian leader to react favourably to the new member in the bloc. Orbán told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that his government supports Sweden’s membership bid and will seek parliamentary approval.

Kristersson also appreciated Turkey’s agreement: “We have shown to Türkiye that we take the fight against terrorism seriously, and they had some valid reasons for their position. We have made a really big effort to show other countries that we take their security concerns as seriously as we do our own.”

Earlier this week, Orbán invited Kristersson to visit Hungary. Kristersson, for his part, agreed, but due to his busy schedule in the coming weeks, the closest suitable opportunity to meet him would be at the EU Council meeting in Brussels.
