Swedish police detain teenager over Uppsala shootings

A teenager has been detained in Sweden in connection with a shooting in the centre of Uppsala that left three people dead, Swedish police said on Wednesday.

“We are now gathering information and the police are conducting door-to-door inquiries and interviewing witnesses,” Reuters quoted the Swedish prosecutor’s office as saying.

According to police, three young people aged between 15 and 20 died at the scene. One of the victims was involved in a case concerning the attempted murder of a relative of the notorious gangster Ismail Abdo.

The police confirmed the deaths of three people at around 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday and launched a murder investigation. A special operation was launched at the scene, and the area was combed until late at night.

One suspect, a minor, has been detained and his role is being investigated. There is information that the perpetrator may have fled on an electric scooter.

Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the incident extremely serious and expressed concern about the surge in violence.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday as Uppsala was preparing to celebrate Walpurgis Night, a Swedish festival of bonfires marking the arrival of spring, which was attended by thousands of people.
