Syrian Prime Minister, Mohamad Ghazi al-Jalali, appointed Bassam Sabbagh as the new foreign minister, according to Arab media.
Sabbagh was deputy to former Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad.
Earlier this month, President Bashar al-Assad appointed former communications minister Al-Jalali to head a new government following parliamentary elections in July. The core ministries remained unchanged, with Major General Ali Abbas becoming defence minister and Major General Mohammad Khaled al-Rahmoun taking over as interior minister.
Al-Jalali has been under European Union sanctions since October 2014 due to the government’s actions during the civil conflict in Syria.
The announcement of the new government came a day after al-Assad announced an amnesty for crimes committed before 22 September, including for those who had not undergone compulsory military service.
