Syria rejoins global communications system

Syria has officially reinstated its membership in the GSMA, an international association of mobile operators, after a 10-year hiatus.

The move will give the country access to global telecommunications services and participation in international forums.

The announcement was made during a visit by a Syrian delegation to Jordan.

The Qatari authorities have invited Syria to the World Mobile Congress, which will be held in Doha in November.

Turkish Airlines will resume flights to Aleppo after 13 years. The airline will resume daily flights between Istanbul and Aleppo on August 1, 2025. This is also an important step towards restoring the connection of Syria’s second largest city to the global air transport network.

In June, media reported that Syria would be fully connected to the Swift international payment system.

Syria has been cut off from global markets for the past 14 years, since 2011, when civil war broke out in the country. After the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, the economy was in free fall and the state treasury was depleted. Within weeks of the change of power, the new leaders announced free market reforms.
