Taiwan has received 38 M1A2T Abrams tanks from the United States. This marks the first delivery of U.S. tanks to Taiwan in 23 years. In total, 122 tanks will arrive over the next two years. While experts praise the M1A2T for its advanced capabilities, some question whether it is suitable for Taiwan’s geography.
Capabilities and challenges of the M1A2T tank in Taiwan
The M1A2T, based on the M1 Abrams, has a 120mm smoothbore gun. It can pierce up to 850mm of armour, making it one of the most powerful tanks in the world. The tank is faster than Taiwan’s M60A3 and CM11 models. Its “hunter-killer” system lets it engage multiple targets at once.
However, experts worry the tank may not be ideal for Taiwan’s mountainous terrain and narrow roads. Michael Hunzeker from George Mason University explained that the M1A2T’s large size and weight could limit its mobility. The tank also has high fuel and maintenance demands, which might stretch Taiwan’s resources.
Strategic impact and future deliveries
The M1A2T offers strong firepower and protection, but its logistical needs pose challenges. Taiwan’s infrastructure might struggle to support the tanks in a conflict, especially with potential Chinese attacks on key facilities. Taiwan’s small size complicates protecting these resources.
Despite these issues, experts believe the M1A2T can play a vital role in Taiwan’s defence. It could help secure strategic points, but other forces would need to protect it from air threats, such as drones and helicopters.
China has opposed these tank deliveries and continues to claim Taiwan as its territory. The M1A2T delivery is part of a larger arms deal made in 2019. Taiwan will receive two more shipments of 42 tanks each in the next two years.
