The Taliban said they would close all national and foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Afghanistan that employed women, according to AP News.
This came two years ago after authorities ordered NGOs to suspend the employment of Afghan women for allegedly improperly wearing Islamic headscarf. The Economy Ministry warned on Sunday that failure to comply with the order would result in the NGOs losing their licence to operate in Afghanistan.
In case of lack of cooperation, all activities of that institution will be canceled and the activity license of that institution, granted by the ministry, will also be canceled.
Earlier this month, the UN Security Council learnt that a growing number of female Afghan aid workers were being prevented from doing their work because of restrictions. However, the Taliban deny that they are preventing humanitarian organisations from doing their work or interfering in their activities.
Authorities have already banned women from many jobs and most public places, and excluded them from education beyond the sixth grade. Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada also ordered that buildings should not have windows facing places where a woman could sit or stand.
According to Saturday’s four-point ordinance, the rule applies to both new and existing buildings. Windows must not overlook spaces such as the yard or kitchen. If a window overlooks such a space, the person in charge of the property must find a way to block the view.
