Tanzanian president sacks health minister amid Cabinet reshuffle

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan sacked Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu in a mini-Cabinet reshuffle, according to African media.

The move is part of a wider effort to reshuffle her government ahead of next year’s general election.

According to a statement released by Chief Secretary Moses Kusiluka, the president has appointed Jenista Mhagama as the new health minister. Mhagama previously served as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for policy, parliament, and coordination.

Mwalimu, a long-time health minister, was not promoted to any other position.

In the same reshuffle, President Hassan appointed renowned law professor Palamagamba Kabudi as Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs, a portfolio previously held by Pindi Chana. The latter was appointed the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism.

The President also promoted William Lukuvi to the position of Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, tasked with overseeing policy, parliament, and coordination.

The reshuffle reflects President Hassan’s continued efforts to consolidate her administration and reinforce governance as the country overcomes development challenges. The Prosecutor General’s Office also underwent changes, with a senior aviation expert, Hamza Johari, appointed as Prosecutor General.
