Teenage girl killed in lion attack near Nairobi

A lion killed a 14-year-old girl near Nairobi, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed.

The animal attacked at a residential compound on a ranch next to Nairobi National Park. Another teenager raised the alarm, and KWS rangers began tracking the lion’s movements.

They followed footprints to the nearby Mbagathi River and found the girl’s remains there.

The lion is still missing. KWS has set traps and sent out search teams to locate it. Officers have also put extra safety measures in place to prevent further incidents.

Nairobi National Park lies about 10 kilometres (six miles) from the city centre. It is home to lions, giraffes, buffalo, leopards, and cheetahs. A fence surrounds most of the park, but the southern side remains open for wildlife migration.

While conflicts between people and lions do happen in Kenya, fatal attacks on humans are rare. Most often, these encounters involve livestock.

Last year, CCTV footage showed a lion taking a Rottweiler from a home near the same park.

In a separate case, KWS reported that an elephant killed a 54-year-old man on Saturday. The elephant had been grazing in Mere Forest in Nyeri County, about 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of Nairobi.

It attacked the man, causing serious chest injuries and internal trauma. He was taken to hospital but later died.
