Iranian officials have forcefully denied speculation that president Masoud Pezeshkian has offered to resign, following a report by a UK-based broadcaster that claimed he had complained of political deadlock and the effective sidelining of his government by the Revolutionary Guards.
The deputy head of the communications department at the office of the Iranian presidency, Mehdi Tabatabai, has described reports of a possible resignation by President Masoud Pezeshkian as “false rumours” in a post on the social media platform X.
The response from Tehran came after a report by Iran International, a television channel based in the United Kingdom. The channel had alleged that Pezeshkian submitted an official letter of resignation to the country’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, in which the president complained of political paralysis and his inability to carry out his duties.
Iran International further claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had effectively excluded the president and his government from decision-making, taken control of key levers of power, and blocked diplomatic contacts with the United States.
Officials in Tehran have characterised the reports as a co-ordinated media attack. Mehdi Tabatabai stressed that the foreign channel was presenting wishful thinking as fact, and that the president had no intention of ending his service to the Iranian people.
The government spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, also posted on X that Pezeshkian’s cabinet was operating normally and continuing to address the country’s pressing issues.
Earlier, Pezeshkian had stated that dialogue between Iran and the United States did not amount to a capitulation by Tehran, emphasising that Iran would not back down from its legitimate rights.
