The Guardian news outlet said on Wednesday it will no longer publish posts on X, citing “disturbing content” on that social media platform, including racism and conspiracy theories.
The newsroom said the publication’s resources could be better utilised to promote their journalism elsewhere.
The Guardian said it had thought about this previously, “given the disturbing content promoted on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism.” It also said the US election campaign had emphasised that X was a “toxic media platform.” The newspaper added:
“Its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use his influence to shape political discourse.”
The editorial emphasised that users can share the publication’s content in their accounts X. Journalists themselves will collect news from the platform and use content from there in their articles.
In total, The Guardian has more than 80 accounts on X with about 27 million subscribers.
Earlier the media reported that Musk is becoming one of the key figures in the formation of the future Trump administration. The US president-elect announced that entrepreneurs Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the US government’s Department of Government Efficiency.
In 2023, Musk publicly endorsed a post by an X user who said Jewish organisations were “inciting hatred against white people.” After that, companies such as Disney, Warner Bros., Apple, IBM, and Comcast announced an advertising boycott of the social network.
