A shooting at a park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, killed three people and injured fifteen others on Friday night, according to police.
The incident happened around 10 pm during an unauthorised car show at Young Park. A fight between two groups led to gunfire, Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story said on Saturday.
Two 19-year-olds and a 16-year-old died. Police have not released their names. The injured victims are between 16 and 36 years old.
No arrests have been made, but officers are following several leads. Police found handgun-calibre shell casings at the scene.
Las Cruces Fire Chief Michael Daniels said seven injured people were transferred to El Paso for further treatment. Four have been discharged, while the status of the others remains unclear.
Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez called it a tragic day for the community. He urged residents to support each other.
Councillor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo described the shooting as a “heinous act of violence” that has left the city mourning.
Las Cruces sits on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, about 41 miles north of the US-Mexico border.
