“Time is running out”: Trump issues stark warning to Iran as nuclear talks falter

The US leader has warned that Iran must “act quickly” or risk total destruction, as the US president escalates his rhetoric against Tehran amid fragile negotiations over a potential peace agreement.

Donald Trump has declared that Iran faces a devastating fate unless it acts swiftly, warning that otherwise “nothing will be left” of the country.

“Time is running out for Iran, and they had better act quickly, otherwise nothing will be left of them,” the US president said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The remarks are believed to refer to a potential peace deal between the two nations. Talks began in April, but Washington and Tehran have yet to reach an agreement. Trump has regularly issued similar threats.

On May 6, he threatened to resume strikes against Iran. Earlier, he promised Tehran “painful consequences” if a ceasefire collapsed. He went so far as to claim that the US military could destroy Iran overnight.

In mid-May, the US presented Iran with a new five-point plan to resolve the conflict. Washington refused to pay reparations to the Iranian side, demanded that 400kg of enriched uranium be removed from Iran and transferred to the US, and insisted that only one nuclear facility be allowed to operate inside Iranian territory.

The US and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28. Hostilities were suspended on April 7. The ceasefire was due to expire on April 22, but Trump decided to extend it while negotiations continued.

At the same time, the US has maintained a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Tehran said the blockade violated the terms of the ceasefire and walked away from the negotiating table.
