TIME named contenders for “Person of the Year for 2024”

Donald Trump, his ally Elon Musk, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and Trump’s rival Kamala Harris have been shortlisted for TIME magazine’s “Person of the Year” in 2024.

The list also includes Princess Catherine of Wales (Kate Middleton), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, actor and podcast host Joe Rogan and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

For nearly 100 years, the publication has named the person or group of people it believes has had the greatest impact on the world over the past 12 months. Meghan Markle was once nominated for the award but did not receive it.

And TIME reports that the Princess of Wales’ name appeared on the list after she “made international media headlines this year and sparked a debate about privacy and the health of public personas.”

The past 12 months have been a trying time for Kate, who underwent abdominal surgery in January, before violent conspiracy theories spread after her departure from the public eye. She later revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer and began preventative chemotherapy before gradually returning to public life, appearing in the Trooping the Colour parade, Wimbledon and then holding a Christmas concert at Westminster Abbey.

Musk responded to a user on social networking site X asking if he deserved the title. “I really don’t want it,” the entrepreneur replied.

Musk has already been honoured with the title in 2021, Trump in 2016 and Harris in 2020. In 2023, TIME named singer Taylor Swift as person of the year.

The winner will be announced this Thursday.
