Tories’ credibility on tax plummets fell – new poll shows

New polls reveal trust in Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party fell on tax plummets, according to The Sun.

The Tories’ credibility on tax plummets collapsed, a new poll by Techne UK showed, in another huge blow to Rishi Sunak, who is trying to turn around his party’s fortunes in an election with less than three weeks to go. Especially dangerous amid Sir Keir Starmer’s approval rating of more than double that of Sunak, as the mailing of votes in a crucial phase of the campaign takes place this weekend.

The collapse in confidence came as the Tories put their full weight behind using tax as a key divisive issue and launched an offensive on the Labour Party’s plans in a last-ditch attempt to prevent Starmer from coming to power. The gambit, featuring chief finance minister Laura Trott alleging Labour is plotting 18 secret tax rises, including a tax raid on house sales, appeared to be an attempt to reverse a sustained polling gap with Labour of around 20 points.

The Techne UK poll of 1,636 British voters found that 36 per cent had the most confidence in Sir Keir on tax, compared to just 16 per cent for Mr Sunak.

The Labour Party also accused the Tories of “unfunded tax promises” which Rachel Reeves said last week would add £4,800 to the average mortgage payment over five years. In a further blow to the Prime Minister, he is level with Farage on the issue as the Reform Party also took 16 per cent of the vote. The poll shows young voters aged 18 to 34 are more likely to trust Farage than Sunak on taxation by 16 per cent to 12 per cent.
