Truck carrying humanitarian aid overturns into crowd in Gaza, killing 20 people

A truck carrying humanitarian aid overturned directly into a crowd in the Gaza Strip. At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured, the enclave’s press service said on Wednesday.

“Twenty people were killed and dozens injured… while trying to get humanitarian aid amid the catastrophic situation in Gaza and the chaos caused by the occupation after a truck carrying food tipped over on them,” the press service said.

Israel will allow the gradual and controlled import of goods into Gaza through local traders, the Israeli military agency COGAT, which coordinates aid, said on Tuesday.

Increased humanitarian aid and co-operation with the Red Cross

“This is aimed at increasing the amount of aid reaching the Gaza Strip while reducing dependence on aid collection by the UN and international organisations,” the agency said in a statement.

On Sunday, Hamas said it was ready to co-operate with the Red Cross to deliver aid to hostages it is holding in Gaza if Israel meets certain conditions, after a video it released showing an emaciated captive drew sharp criticism.

Palestinian and UN officials said that about 600 trucks with humanitarian aid are needed per day to meet humanitarian needs in Gaza — the same number that Israel allowed into Gaza before the war.

Earlier, 18 people were killed in the Gaza Strip due to mistakes made while dropping humanitarian aid from aircraft. Six people died in the stampede as they tried to reach the boxes dropped from above.
