Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revealed how during a private meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump he jokingly suggested trading part of the country for a US state.
Trudeau recalled about his meeting with Trump:
“We started musing back and forth about this. And I started to suggest well maybe there could be a trade for Vermont or California for certain parts.”
The Canadian prime minister continued that Trump immediately decided that this conversation was “not so funny anymore” and moved on to another topic.
Trump suggested that Canada could become a new US state during a meeting with Trudeau on December 3 last year. At the time, he added that the accession could materialise if Ottawa failed to address illegal migration and drug smuggling.
On January 7, Trump published on his social network Truth Social a map with Canada annexed to the United States. On the same day, he said Greenland should become part of the US to ensure national security and defence against alleged Chinese and Russian threats. At the same time, Trudeau also rejected Trump’s proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the US. Reacting to this, billionaire Elon Musk, addressing Trudeau, called him a girl and pointed out that he no longer decides anything.
In turn, Canadian Ontario Premier Doug Ford on January 7 offered to buy Alaska amid Trump’s statement. Ford added that under his watch, the annexation of Canada to the United States will not happen.
Meanwhile, CNN journalist Haley Talbot reported on January 9 that senators in the United States discussed with Trump the possibility of Canada joining the United States. According to her, Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin described the discussion with the words “it was fun.”
