US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that his son Donald Trump Jr. as well as a number of representatives will be travelling to Greenland for a visit, and promised huge benefits to its people if Greenland becomes part of the United States.
The Republican wrote on his Truth Social network:
“We will protect it and keep it safe from a very evil outside world. Let’s make Greenland great again!”
The fact that Trump Jr. will visit Greenland on Tuesday was previously reported by Danmarks Radio. According to its information, meetings between the son of the US president-elect and members of the Greenlandic government are not scheduled.
The visit by Trump’s son is very unexpected. It comes at a time of intense political debate about the future of Greenland’s relationship with Denmark. The debate began after Greenland’s head of government, Mute Egede, said in his New Year’s Eve speech that the island should seek independence from Copenhagen.
On December 31, Denmark decided to allocate additional funds for the defence of the island of Greenland, which has the status of a special administrative unit.
On December 23, Trump said that Greenland, which is part of Denmark, should become the property of the United States. The future American president noted that ownership and control of Greenland “is an absolute necessity.” According to him, it is necessary “for the purposes of national security and freedom around the world.”
