Former US President Donald Trump filed an appeal on Wednesday against a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that barred him from running in the primary election.
Besides intensely preparing for the presidential election in November, he is also dealing with lawsuits and judgements against him for his role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump challenged the top court’s December 19 ruling – which found him guilty of participating in the raid and barred him from running in the Colorado primary election – to the US Supreme Court, asking for the ruling to be overturned.
Following the ruling, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced on December 28 that Trump would be barred from the state’s Republican Party primary because of his role in the raid.
Attorneys for the former president cite that no state court can prevent a presidential candidate from appearing on the ballot. They also argue that the Colorado Supreme Court has misinterpreted the relevant constitutional provisions.
Under the ruling, Trump’s name will not appear on ballots in any of the states in the March 5 primary elections where Republican candidates will compete.
The US Supreme Court is expected to review the application and issue a final ruling on Trump’s campaign in the two states in the near future.
