The American magazine Time named on Thursday US President-elect Donald Trump the person of the year.
The magazine recalled that the first term of the 78-year-old businessman and politician ended with “disgrace” and the storming of the Capitol. In addition, several criminal cases against Trump were opened at once. Against this background, the Republican Party turned away from him. However, the businessman then won the primaries of the party and became a presidential candidate. In addition, this year in July he survived an assassination attempt and later another attempted assassination.
According to Time, Trump criticized Kyiv for launching US-made missiles into Russian territory last month. He said:
“I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing that? We’re just escalating this war and making it worse.”
When pressed on whether or not he would abandon Ukraine, Trump said he would use US support for Ukraine as leverage against Russia in negotiating an end to the war. He also added:
“I want to reach an agreement, and the only way you’re going to reach an agreement is not to abandon.”
On November 5, Trump won the presidential election, becoming only the second former head of state in American history to return to the White House after losing the previous election. Before that, Democrat Grover Cleveland managed to do so – in 1888, he failed to be elected for a second term, but won four years later.
A total of ten people were nominated for the title of man of the year. In addition to Trump, they were:
- US vice-president Kamala Harris, who entered the race after Joe Biden dropped out of the race and lost to Trump;
- SpaceX and Tesla founder Ilon Musk, a billionaire businessman who won a seat in the new US presidential administration;
- Princess Kate Middleton of Wales, who was diagnosed with cancer this year and underwent chemotherapy;
- Alexei Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya;
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu;
- Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell;
- American comedian and podcast host Joe Rogan;
- Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum;
- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
