Trump extends TikTok sale deadline for 3rd time

US President Donald Trump will extend the deadline given to the owner of the social media platform TikTok to find a buyer in the US so that the app can continue to operate in the country.

This week, Trump plans to sign an executive order that will allow the social network to continue operating despite a law banning it on national security grounds, the report explains.

“As President Trump has repeatedly stated, he does not want TikTok to cease operations,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. The order will give Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, an additional three months to comply with the requirements of the law passed in 2024.

According to the document, it is required to sell the service to a buyer not affiliated with China, otherwise the app will be completely banned in the US. “The extension will be for 90 days, during which time the administration will work to ensure that the deal goes through and that Americans can continue to use TikTok with confidence that their data is secure,” Levitt emphasised.

During his first term as president, Trump already tried to ban TikTok by signing a corresponding order. He claimed that the app could be used in the interests of a hostile state, namely China. However, the courts blocked the ban.

During his current term, Trump has already extended TikTok’s operation in the US twice. He last announced the extension for TikTok on his Truth Social platform in early April, saying the deal “requires additional work to ensure all necessary approvals are obtained.” At that time, he indicated that the platform could continue to operate in the US for another 75 days.

The initial deadline set for the sale of TikTok by ByteDance expired on January 19. However, Trump signed the order after taking office the following day, giving the company an additional 75 days to complete the deal.
