Trump meets with Musk amid searching for presidential campaign donors

Former US President and current presidential candidate Donald Trump met with businessman Elon Musk on 3 March, counting on his financial support for his presidential campaign, US media reported citing sources.

According to the NYT, three other wealthy donors to the Republican Party attended the meeting with the former president. The newspaper writes that Trump “praised” Musk in front of those gathered and expects to speak with the businessman one-on-one soon.

Details of the meeting are not given; whether Musk has decided to invest in Trump’s campaign is not specified. The businessman did not respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment.

Last year Musk said that he would not vote for Joe Biden again and – according to the Times report – he has made clear that defeating the president is a priority.

Musk has supported both Republicans and Democrats in the past, and Tesla and Space X have repeatedly received federal subsidies and contracts. Recently, the billionaire’s rhetoric has become increasingly belligerent and similar to Trump’s tone. This is especially true on immigration policy, where Musk, like the former president, is in favour of tightening it.
