US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to prompt the government and consumers to buy plastic drinking straws, according to Reuters.
We’re going back to plastic straws. I don’t think plastic is going to affect a shark very much, as they’re munching their way through the ocean.
Monday’s executive order would reverse efforts by the administration of former US President Joe Biden to phase out single-use plastic and tackle waste.
Trump also cancelled Biden’s policy to phase out the use of all single-use plastics on federal lands by 2032.
In November, the US Environmental Protection Agency released a plan to reduce the consumption of non-biodegradable single-use plastic, which damages ecosystems and contaminates food supplies.
Last year’s OECD study predicted that the amount of plastic waste dumped into the environment could rise from 81 million tonnes in 2020 to 119 million tonnes in 2040.
