Trump says Iran “sort of agreed” to US terms

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States was close to reaching a nuclear deal with Iran, adding that Tehran had “in a certain sense” accepted the terms of the agreement.

“Iran has agreed in some form to the terms of a future deal (…). They will not be able to have nuclear weapons,” Trump said in Doha during his tour of the Middle East.

At the same time, Trump would like “Iran to remain a great country.”

Earlier, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Shamkhani told NBC News that Tehran was ready, under certain conditions and in exchange for Washington lifting economic sanctions, to sign a nuclear deal with the United States.

Shamkhani said that Iran would commit to never building a nuclear weapon, get rid of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium that could be used to build a weapon, and agree to enrich uranium only to lower levels needed for peaceful purposes.

On Sunday, the fourth round of indirect talks between the US and Iran took place in Oman. The Iranian and American delegations were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced his willingness to make a number of concessions and said that the parties had agreed to continue the talks.
