Trump signs ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ during White House July 4th celebration

After Congress passed the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill,’ President Donald Trump signed it into law on Friday during the July 4th Independence Day event at the White House.

The legislation is 900 pages long and includes tax cuts, spending reductions, and key Republican priorities. These cover increased funding for national defence and immigration enforcement, according to the Associated Press.

At the ceremony, Trump said, “I’ve never seen people so happy in our country because so many different groups are being taken care of: the military, civilians of all types, jobs of all types.” He added, “You have the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, the largest border security investment in American history.”

The signing took place on the South Lawn. Hundreds attended, including Trump supporters, members of Congress, military families, and White House staff.

Congress passes ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

The day before, Congress approved the $4.5 trillion tax cuts bill by a close vote of 218 to 214. The Republican-led House passed the bill, but two Republicans joined 212 Democrats in opposing it. No Democrats voted in favour.

Trump called the bill’s passage historic. He told reporters, “The biggest bill of its kind ever signed and it’s going to make this country into a rocket ship. It’s going to be really great.” On his social media platform, Truth Social, he wrote, “Together, we will celebrate our Nation’s Independence, and the beginning of our new Golden Age. The people of the United States will be richer, safer, and prouder than ever before.”

Democrats united against the bill but could not block it. Most Republicans supported the legislation, though a small number voted against it.

Key features of the legislation

The bill makes the 2017 tax cuts permanent. It introduces broad spending cuts and funds stricter immigration enforcement.

One major part is the $350 billion border and national security plan. This includes $46 billion to expand the US-Mexico border wall and $45 billion for 100,000 migrant detention beds. The plan also funds a recruitment drive for immigration officers, adding 10,000 new ICE agents. Each will receive a $10,000 signing bonus, according to media reports.
