US President Donald Trump will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next Monday, the US administration officials said.
The talks will take place amid Washington’s efforts to secure an agreement from Israel on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu’s visit is scheduled to follow a trip to Washington by Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer.
Trump has repeatedly stated that his priority is to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas. On Friday, he told reporters: “We hope that a ceasefire can be achieved in the coming week,” but did not disclose any details.
In addition, Trump spoke out in defence of Netanyahu, saying that the Israeli prime minister’s prosecution was unfair. According to Axios, the American leader even threatened to cut military aid to Israel if the pressure on Netanyahu continued. The prime minister is accused of corruption, fraud and breach of trust.
Trump called Netanyahu a “war hero,” emphasising his role in countering “the Iranian nuclear threat.” He also recalled that Israel receives billions of dollars in military aid from the US more than any other country.
