Trump to send additional 2,000 National Guard troops to LA anti-ICE riots

California Governor Gavin Newsom said that US President Donald Trump had ordered 2,000 more National Guard troops to intervene in protests in Los Angeles organised in support of illegal migrants detained by immigration and customs police (ICE).

The governor emphasised that only 300 of the troops sent are participating in operations on the ground, while the rest are “sitting idle in federal buildings” without even basic supplies such as food and water.

“This isn’t about public safety. It’s about stroking a dangerous President’s ego. This is Reckless. Pointless. And Disrespectful to our troops,” he said.

In a separate statement, Newsom addressed the residents of Los Angeles, emphasising the importance of their civic stance.

“Trump is trying to sow chaos by sending 4,000 troops to American soil. The instigators who are taking advantage of his disorder will be held accountable. Stay safe. Stay calm. Support each other,” the governor said.

He also noted that California authorities are stepping up security measures by deploying more than 800 additional state and local law enforcement officers.

“Chaos is exactly what Trump wants. Now it’s California’s turn to restore order,” Newsom added.

700 marines sent to Los Angeles

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the deployment of about 700 marines to Los Angeles “due to the increasing threat.”

“Even if Gavin Newsom refuses to act, we have a duty to protect federal law enforcement,” he wrote on social media.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the information, adding that an additional 2,000 National Guard troops had been called up for federal duty at the president’s request.

“The Department of Defence, at the direction of the president, has deployed National Guard troops to support ICE and ensure the safe operation of federal law enforcement agencies,” he said.

Protests in Los Angeles against ICE actions

Protests continue in Los Angeles in support of illegal immigrants detained by ICE. The demonstrations are accompanied by mass arrests and periodic clashes with the police. President Trump said he was deploying the National Guard to stabilise the situation, accusing the city administration and the Democratic governor of failing to maintain order.
