Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a 250ft “triumphal arch” in Washington, D.C. The project is estimated to cost around £11 million, and officials may use taxpayer funding to support its construction.
The US president revealed the design for what he described as the “greatest and most beautiful” arch. It is a gold-and-white structure planned for the capital. The monument would mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. It would also stand taller than nearby landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial. In addition, it would exceed the scale of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Design details and proposed location
Trump shared details of the project on Truth Social. He said his administration had submitted the plans to the Commission of Fine Arts. He added that the arch would be a major addition to Washington, D.C. and that Americans would enjoy it for many years.
The design includes the inscription “One Nation Under God”. It also features a statue of Lady Liberty. Furthermore, four golden lion statues would stand at the base of the structure.
The proposed site is a roundabout near Arlington National Cemetery. This cemetery is the largest military burial ground in the United States. However, the project has already faced criticism. Some concerns focus on the height of the structure and its impact on local views and pedestrian sightlines.
Funding plans and concerns over the arch project
The White House has not confirmed the final cost of the arch. However, reports suggest around $15 million (£11 million) could come from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition, private donations may help fund the project. As a result, the total cost could rise above the initial estimate.
Meanwhile, the proposal follows another large-scale project linked to Trump. This includes a planned £300 million ballroom at the White House. That scheme required changes to the East Wing and is currently paused due to legal challenges.
