Trump welcomes US-brokered peace deal between Congo and Rwanda

On Friday, President Trump welcomed the signing of a peace agreement brokered by the United States between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The deal aims to bring an end to a violent conflict that has lasted for nearly 30 years.

The agreement, facilitated by the Trump administration, seeks to halt the ongoing violence in eastern DRC, where a militia, believed to be supported by Rwanda, controls significant areas. Rwanda has denied providing direct support to these groups. Representatives from both nations signed the accord in Washington earlier this week.

Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump described the event as a significant achievement for peace. “This agreement marks a historic moment between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda,” he said. “This conflict has persisted for many years, around 30 years as reported.”

Humanitarian impact and future outlook

The region has experienced instability for decades. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the conflict in eastern Congo has caused thousands of deaths recently and has contributed to approximately six million deaths over the last three decades. The ongoing violence has also triggered a major humanitarian crisis and widespread displacement within the area.

President Trump noted that the United States will apply “considerable pressure” on both countries to uphold the terms of the agreement. “There will be significant penalties if the agreement is breached, including financial consequences,” he stated, while expressing optimism that peace will be maintained.

The deal also grants the United States access to the DRC’s mineral resources, including gold, copper, and lithium.

In addition to this agreement, President Trump highlighted his administration’s involvement in easing other international conflicts. “This represents a remarkable step forward,” he remarked. “Within a few months, we have facilitated peace agreements involving India and Pakistan, India and Iran, as well as the DRC and Rwanda, among others.”

Vice President JD Vance commended the President’s efforts regarding the DRC-Rwanda agreement. “For as long as I can remember, the news surrounding these two countries has largely focused on conflict and violence,” Vance said. “Now, this moment offers hope for a future of peace and prosperity that the next generation can build upon.”
