Trump’s new department head nominations: Labour, Housing, Treasury Departments

President-elect Donald Trump on Friday announced his nominees to head the Department of Labour and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, while Scott Bessent, a hedge fund executive and top fundraiser for his campaign, will be his pick to head the Treasury Department.

Trump announces Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Scott Turner to lead Labour, Housing agencies

Trump said Lori Chavez-DeRemer is his choice to be the next head of the Department of Labour. He claimed:

“Lori’s strong support from both the Business and Labor communities will ensure that the Labour Department can unite Americans of all backgrounds behind our Agenda for unprecedented National Success – Making America Richer, Wealthier, Stronger and more Prosperous than ever before!”

The president-elect also named former NFL player Scott Turner to lead the Housing and Urban Development agency.

Turner served as executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalisation Council (WHORC). Trump said separately:

“Scott is an NFL Veteran, who, during my First Term, served as the First Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), helping to lead an Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities.”

During Trump’s first term as president, Turner served as the first executive director of the White House Opportunity and Renewal Council. Under Scott’s leadership, the council attracted more than $50 billion in private investment, Trump said. He also said in a statement:

“Scott will work side by side with me to make America great again for every American.”

Chavez-DeRemer and Turner must be confirmed by the Senate before taking office. The inauguration of Trump, who defeated Democrat Kamala Harris in the presidential election earlier this month, will take place on January 20.

Trump names Scott Bessent to head Treasury Department

Trump said on his social media platform Truth that Bessent will help him “usher in a new golden age for the United States.” He also added:

“Unlike in past Administrations, we will ensure than no Americans will be left behind in the next and Greatest Economic Boom, and Scott will lead that effort for me. Scott will support my Policies that will drive US Competitiveness, and stop unfair Trade imbalances, work to create an Economy that places Growth at the forefront, especially through our coming World Energy Dominance.”

Bessent, founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management, advised Trump on economic policy during the campaign.

The 62-year-old businessman oversees businesses in a variety of industries, including agriculture, hospitality, publishing and real estate, and has more than 35 years of experience in investment management, the statement said. Bessent must be confirmed by the Senate before taking office.

The election for the 47th president of the United States was held on November 5. In the national vote, Trump received 51 per cent of the vote, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris received 47.4 per cent. Later, the politician, speaking to supporters, called himself the 47th President of the United States and said that his goal as head of state considers the end of military conflicts in the world.
