Tunisia’s presidential elections would be held as planned in September and October, the head of the electoral commission announced.
Farouk Bouasker, the head of the Tunisian Independent High Electoral Commission, stated that the commission will announce the timeline and arrangements after finalising local council formation issues by April.
Bouasker also stated that 279 local councils would open on 1 March and that all local councils would be established and start their work by early April.
Tunisian President Kais Saied was elected on 13 October 2019 for a five-year term and is expected to run in the upcoming elections.
On 25 July 2022, Saied arranged a referendum to adopt a new constitution, overturning the country’s 2014 constitution. Tunisia is undergoing a deep political crisis that has worsened the country’s economic situation since 2021, when the president overthrew the government and dissolved parliament.
