Turkey backs Dutch PM as new NATO secretary-general

Turkey notified other NATO members on Monday that it would support Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s candidacy for NATO Secretary-General.

The decision came after Rutte met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul last week to seek support for the NATO position.

Erdoğan held a one-on-one meeting with Rutte stating that NATO’s southern flank needed Turkey’s leadership as the country played an essential part in ending the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the “horrific war” in Ukraine.

Turkey is playing an important role in trying to end the Gaza war.
