Arrested Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has been sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for insulting a public official, Turkish TV channel Habertürk reported on Wednesday.
“Ekrem İmamoğlu was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for “publicly insulting an official in the performance of his duties” and threats,” the report said.
The politician was prosecuted for his statements against Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Akin Gürlek, whose integrity he allegedly questioned.
The court hearings in the Imamoğlu case are taking place in Istanbul’s Silivri prison, where he has been held since his arrest in March on corruption charges. The court hearing was attended by the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, who supports İmamoğlu, and the mayor’s lawyers.
