Two dead, nine injured in explosion at Italian gas refinery

Two people have been killed and nine others injured in an explosion at an oil storage facility owned by an oil company near Florence.

The incident occurred at an Italian refinery owned by the energy company Eni. Immediately after the explosion, residents in various neighbourhoods of Florence heard a strong noise and also noticed thick black smoke rising into the sky.

Authorities urged residents to keep their windows closed due to the risk of smoke. “Extinguishing operations are currently underway. According to the authorities, firefighters, rescue workers and police are working at the site,” the report said.

Residents of Campi Bisenzio, a town eight kilometres from Calenzano, were told to close their windows to protect themselves from the smoke and not to go outside. Regional train services between Florence and Prato were also disrupted by the closure of Calenzano station.
